Hotel Astoria is in Ulrichen, in the upper Goms valley of Valais, where the Nufenen road leaves the Rhône valley for Ticino. The Grimsel and the Furka start a few kilometres up the valley at Gletsch, so three of the big Swiss passes are within a short ride of the door. The owner rides a motorcycle and offers guided rides, there are route descriptions, and bikes go in a garage. That makes it a strong base for a few days of pass loops. The passes open and close with the snow, so check they are open before you plan the week.
