Spain is an underutilised motorcycle touring country outside the Pyrenees. The interior plateau — the Meseta — is vast and fast. The mountain ranges that cross it — Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid, Sierra Nevada south of Granada, the Picos de Europa on the northern coast — deliver some of Europe's most dramatic riding on roads that carry a fraction of the traffic they would see in Germany or France. The northern green coast from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela combines Atlantic scenery with consistently excellent food.

Key Roads

The N-621 through the Picos de Europa gorges between the Cantabrian coast and the Castilian plateau is among the finest roads in Spain. The Desfiladero de la Hermida — a narrow limestone gorge where the road clings to the cliff face above the Deva river — is unforgettable. The approach from the coast is the most dramatic direction.

The Sierra Nevada road — the highest paved road in Spain reaching 3,398 metres at Pico Veleta — is accessible from Granada. The road to the ski station at Pradollano and beyond (weather permitting) provides sustained high-altitude riding with views toward Africa on clear days.

The Ruta de la Plata — the old silver road connecting Seville to Santiago de Compostela — is a long-distance touring route of genuine historical interest. The N-630 and associated roads follow the Via de la Plata pilgrimage route through Extremadura and Salamanca on quiet, well-surfaced roads through largely empty landscape.

When to Go

The timing depends on region. The northern coast is rideable April through October (Atlantic rainfall year-round). The interior Meseta and the southern routes are best April–June and September–October — the summer heat on the plateau can exceed 40°C and makes midday riding genuinely unpleasant. The Sierra Nevada road is accessible in the brief window between snowmelt (June) and early autumn snowfall.

Biker Facilities

Spanish motorcycle accommodation infrastructure is improving but still less developed than France or Germany. Paradores — the government-run historic hotels — provide reliable high-quality accommodation in unusual historic buildings (castles, monasteries) throughout the country. Pensiones and casas rurales throughout the rural regions are typically welcoming to motorcycles. Fuel is widely available at competitive prices.
