Doone Valley Camping is a campsite at Oare, tucked into a valley on Exmoor just inside Somerset, with Lynton as its post town. The A39 coast road runs above it: east it drops down Porlock Hill, signed at 1 in 4, and west it falls into Lynmouth down Countisbury Hill. Both are steep enough to plan your gear changes in advance. You bring your own tent, so pack for wind and rain on the moor. Ask whether there is hard standing for the bike, because grass pitches soften quickly after a wet night, and carry a side-stand puck.
