The Spanish Pyrenees deliver the southern half of the great Pyrenean motorcycle adventure. The approach from France via any of the major passes — Portalet, Pourtalet, Somport, or the famous Tunnel de Bielsa — deposits you into a landscape that is distinctly more arid and dramatic than the French northern slopes. The Ordesa canyon national park, the Hecho and Ansó valleys, and the Puerto de la Bonaigua in Catalonia all deliver high-quality mountain riding with considerably less tourist infrastructure than the more visited French side.

Key Roads

The Puerto de la Bonaigua (2,072m) in the Catalan Pyrenees is among the best maintained high-altitude roads on the Spanish side. The N-260 which crosses it forms part of the Ruta Pirinexus circuit — a 1,400km signed loop around the Pyrenees on both Spanish and French sides. The Bonaigua approach from Vielha in the Val d'Aran is particularly good: long sweeping hairpins through open alpine terrain.

The Hecho and Ansó valleys in the Aragonese Pyrenees are quiet, narrow, and rewarding. The A-176 up the Hecho valley ends at the Selva de Oza beech forest — a natural turnaround point with excellent picnic potential. The connecting road between the two valleys via the Puerto de Aisa is narrow and demands attention.

The Puerto de Somport (1,640m) is the main border crossing between France and Spain on the western Aragonese Pyrenees. The N-330 on the Spanish side provides steady sweeping riding through the Canfranc valley down to Jaca — the natural hub town for western Aragonese Pyrenees touring.

When to Go

May through October. The high passes are subject to snow closure from November through to April or May depending on the year. July and August bring significant Spanish holiday traffic to the main valley towns. May, June, and September offer the most consistent riding conditions with lighter traffic. The Ordesa national park has restricted vehicle access in peak season — check current restrictions before planning a visit.

Biker Facilities

Jaca is the best general base for the Aragonese Pyrenees — full hotel range, good restaurants, easy access to France via Somport. Aínsa, in the pre-Pyrenean foothills, makes an excellent base for Ordesa exploration and has good accommodation options. The Spanish biker infrastructure is less developed than in Germany or France but the people are welcoming and the food is excellent.
