The Black Forest is Germany's most famous motorcycle destination, and it earns the reputation. The B500 — the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, or Black Forest High Road — is one of Europe's great touring roads: 60 kilometres of ridge-line riding through dense pine forest with panoramic views east toward the Swabian Alb and west toward Alsace and on clear days as far as the Swiss Alps. Add the Kinzig valley roads, the B33, and the network of forest Kreisstrassen, and the Black Forest delivers more variety than most regions twice its size.

Key Roads

The B500 is the headline. Starting from Baden-Baden in the north and running south to Freudenstadt, it stays high on the ridge for almost its entire length, switching between open moorland sections with long views and tight forest sections where the canopy closes overhead. It is not a technical road — the corners are broad and well-signposted — but it is relentlessly enjoyable at a touring pace and the standard of the scenery is exceptional throughout.

South of Freudenstadt the character changes. The B294 and B33 through the Kinzig valley and across to the Bodensee deliver more varied riding: river valley roads with sweeping bends, then the long climb back up to the ridge on the southern crossings. The B317 through the Wiesental toward Basel is another southern highlight, with the section above Todtnau delivering sustained switchbacks above the tree line.

The B500 continuation south from Freudenstadt through St Blasien and down to Waldshut-Tiengen along the Rhine is less well-known but arguably finer. The roads narrow, the traffic thins, and the Black Forest reveals a quieter character that the northern section rarely shows in summer.

What to Expect

The Black Forest is Germany's most popular domestic holiday region and the road traffic reflects it. The B500 on a July bank holiday weekend is genuinely busy — not dangerous, but a steady stream of camper vans and cyclists. Weekday riding in May, June, or September is a different experience entirely. The roads are well-surfaced and consistently maintained. The southern sections see materially less traffic than the B500 north of Freudenstadt.

When to Go

May and June are the sweet spot. The forest is vivid green, temperatures are warm but not humid, and the bank holiday crowds haven't arrived. September is excellent for the same reasons. July and August are fine for riding but accommodation books up quickly — plan ahead. October brings the beginning of autumn colour and lighter traffic; the higher sections can be cold so pack an extra layer.

Biker Facilities

The Black Forest has the best biker accommodation infrastructure in Germany. Every town of any size along the B500 corridor has at least one guesthouse that specifically advertises to motorcyclists: secure parking, gear drying, and hearty breakfasts that keep you going until early afternoon. Baiersbronn, Freudenstadt, Triberg, and St Blasien are reliable hubs with multiple options at different price points. Petrol is never more than 20 kilometres away on any main route.

The Black Forest sits at the intersection of Germany, France, and Switzerland. From Strasbourg it is under an hour. From Basel 45 minutes. From Stuttgart 90 minutes on the motorway. It is an excellent first destination on a continental tour from the UK via Calais — the Channel crossing to the Black Forest is a comfortable two-day ride via the Vosges.
