hotelThe Sauerland sits south of the Ruhr conurbation and is the closest serious motorcycle riding to the densely populated western German cities. Within 60 minutes of Dortmund, Bochum, and Essen lies a landscape of forested ridges, reservoir roads, and tight valley sections that delivers proper riding without requiring a long haul to Bavaria or the Schwarzwald. It is a workhorse region — not as scenically dramatic as the Harz or the Eifel but consistently good and significantly less crowded.
Key Roads
The Sauerland Höhenflug — a suggested touring route across the ridge tops — runs roughly east–west across the region and provides a useful framework. The B236 and B55 form the main arteries, with numerous Kreisstrassen dropping into the valleys and climbing back up that are often more interesting than the main roads. The Lennetal and the Ruhr valley roads deliver fast riverside riding with good surfaces.
The reservoir roads around Sorpesee, Biggesee, and Möhnesee are the region's most distinctive riding. Möhnesee in particular — the dam made famous by the 1943 Dambusters raid — has an atmospheric loop road that traces the reservoir edge through pine forest. The B55 south of Olpe toward Medebach provides some of the best sustained ridge riding in the region.
What to Expect
The Sauerland's proximity to the Ruhr means it sees significant weekend traffic from city riders, particularly in summer. The region is primarily forested with occasional open ridge sections. Weather can be unsettled — the Sauerland sits in a moisture trap between the Rhine lowlands and the central German plateau. Pack waterproofs regardless of the forecast.
When to Go
May through September. Summer weekdays are the best combination of weather and light traffic. Weekend riding in peak season means sharing the roads with a large local riding population — not a problem but worth knowing. The autumn colour in October is underrated and road conditions remain good.
Biker Facilities
The Sauerland has a well-developed biker accommodation scene specifically because of its Ruhr proximity. Olpe, Schmallenberg, Winterberg, and Brilon all have properties used to hosting motorcyclists. Winterberg doubles as a ski resort and the infrastructure reflects it — good food, solid accommodation, reliable parking. Petrol is never a problem.
