The Belgian coast is a compact but rewarding riding destination for those who enjoy coastal roads with historical depth and excellent food infrastructure. The 67-kilometre stretch of North Sea coastline from De Panne in the west to Knokke in the east is connected by the N34 coastal road, passing through towns whose beach culture, seafood restaurants, and Art Deco architecture make them worth visiting as well as riding through. The First World War battlefields in the immediate hinterland add a layer of historical significance unique to this coastline.

Key Roads

The N34 coastal road runs the full length of the Belgian coast. It is flat, wide, and well-maintained, running behind or occasionally alongside the dunes. The coastal tram (Kusttram) shares the coastal avenue in the resort towns — exercise appropriate care when crossing tram tracks at angle. The road is best ridden early morning or out of peak season when the beach resorts are quieter.

The Westhoek polders — the low-lying farmland between the coast and the Ypres Salient — provide an unexpected network of quiet lane roads connecting the WWI cemeteries and memorials. These lanes are narrow, flat, and almost entirely traffic-free. The Menin Gate at Ypres, where the Last Post is sounded every evening at 20h00, is 30 kilometres from the coast and worth the detour.

The Leie valley south of Ghent connects the coastal region to the Ardennes via a network of rural roads through the Flemish countryside. The N8 and N43 provide the quickest routes south; the D-roads through the bocage offer more interest.

When to Go

April through October. August is the Belgian coast's peak month — the resort towns are packed. May, June, and September offer the best combination of weather, open restaurants, and manageable traffic. The autumn light on the polders and memorials is striking.

Biker Facilities

De Panne, Koksijde, Nieuwpoort, and Blankenberge all have motorcycle-friendly accommodation. Belgian hospitality is straightforward and excellent — the food quality on the coast (fresh North Sea fish, mussels, frites) is consistently high. The coast is a natural first or last stop on a Channel crossing tour.
